The cold temperatures of winter can be hard on heavy equipment. Use the following winterization tips to help keep your equipment in top shape during the colder months.

1. Use a Winter-Appropriate Fuel

Your heavy equipment may function better with a cold-weather appropriate fuel, such as #1 diesel or a quality gasoline mix. Consider making the switch for better engine performance.

2. Clean the Battery

Inspect the equipment's battery for any debris buildup, which can interfere with conductivity. There may also be corrosion around the battery posts, which can be solved by cleaning them with some baking soda and a small brush.

3. Check the Tires

Cold temperatures can cause tire air pressure to fluctuate. Be sure to regularly measure the air pressure on your heavy equipment tires and then adjust as needed. Tires that are underinflated or overinflated can face problems, such as a higher chance of a blowout or reduced equipment fuel efficiency.

4. Replace the Oil and Coolant

Coolant plays an important role in the proper functioning of heavy equipment, from protecting against corrosion to lubricating the moving pieces.

The engine oil is also very important and helps with keeping parts lubricated and keeping the engine from overheating.

Throughout the winter, be sure to check the coolant and engine oil. Top them off as they get low so that your equipment will have optimized performance.
